Description:

Winter Solstice 2006.
"Stroll against Coal!"

Protest Parade against Climate Change.

The Winter Solstice, Wednesday 21st June.
Meet at Civic Park, 3:30pm.  Parade to Pacific Park.

You are invited to protest against coal dependency and climate change.  Come and parade through the streets of Newcastle with your furry friends, family, bikes, skates and flamboyant costumes relating to climate change, the coal industry and renewable energy.  The parade will be followed by some renewable energy-powered entertainment in Pacific Park.

Why? Climate change is the biggest threat to Earth and its inhabitants that we have ever seen. The planet is warming at an alarming rate and this is having devastating effects. We only have to see the rise in natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina and recently Cyclone Monica and Cyclone Larry to realise that time for change is running out fast. As the need to cut global greenhouse pollution reaches crisis point, and awareness of the problem grows stronger than ever, the Hunter coal industry pushes on recklessly. Newcastle is the WORLDS largest coal exporter, pumping out 80 million tonnes of coal per year, equivalent to approximately 208 million tonnes of CO2 emissions every year. Yet the federal government is preparing to increase the exports from Newcastle, committing to a $150 million dollars over 5 years to assist the multi-national coal corporations increase Newcastle's export capacity by 70%. This translates to 140 million tonnes of coal exported, and about 364 million tonnes of carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere and destabilising the earth's climate.

Without consumer demands there wouldn't be the need to increase our Coal exports. First world countries such as Australia need to take responsibility for Climate change and demand a better alternative. We need to turn to green power and turn to public transport because the lives of billions and the future of Earth are depending on us.

When and Where?

" Stroll against coal" will begin in Civic Park Newcastle at 3:30pm and proceed down Hunter St to Pacific Park in Newcastle East.

How? The Winter Solstice coincides with peak energy consumption due to the higher demand on heating and lighting. We urge people to turn off their power at home or in the office before joining us at Civic Park.

Tell your friends, colleges, EVERYONE to come along and show their dissatisfaction for Newcastle's role in climate change. Come along dressed up and ready to spread the message.

Transport

Great! A big bike parade! Yes!

I love seeing those bicycles going down the road.  Much better than those pollution, cancer, asthma, danger causing cars!
