BAM - Blackalls Against the Mine
In 2007 Frank Sartor as Minister for Planning introduced a State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) to ban open cut mining in Lake Macquarie. Centennial Coal is claiming that the Olstan mine is an underground mine! Yet at no time are any workers or machines underground – only the auger drill! Centennial’s proposal requires land to be cleared for access pits between 40-100m wide, up to 30m deep for a total of 3.5k. The dust produced can carry for up to 10k. Exposure can cause and worsen respiratory problems. All mining methods cause noise and vibration with the potential to damage buildings and stress people and animals. The Olstan mine is to operate between 7am and 10pm on weekdays and 8am and 6pm on weekends and public holidays. The proposed mine is within 700m of schools and many homes. WE SAY NO OPEN CUT AUGER MINE
