16.09.2008 - 12:01
Australia/Sydney
  • Protest the Gunnedah Basin Coal Conference
  • Demand a moratorium on coal mining, coal exports, and coal-fired power stations.
  • Tuesday 16th September 2008 8:15am
  • Outside the Civic Theatre - Chandos Street Gunnedah .

Coal companies call the NSW Gunnedah Basin the "new coal frontier". They've have just about exhausted the Hunter Valley coalfields supplying the world's biggest coal port at Newcastle, and in so doing they've helped bring the world to the precipice of climate catastrophe. Now they have their sights on the massive coal reserves over the mountains from the Hunter - in the Gunnedah Basin. If the coal companies get their way, the fertile black soil plains, and the precious remnant bushland habitat of the Gunnedah Basin will be destroyed by coal mining. Billions of tonnes of carbon will be poured into the atmosphere. The world is in the midst of a climate crisis, and greenhouse pollution needs to start falling immediately. That means we need to stop expanding coal, and start phasing it out.

This protest is organised by Gunnedah locals, not Rising Tide, but you are welcome to contact Rising Tide to find out more:
