Help Stop Hunter Coal Export Expansion: Write a Letter

At around 80 million tonnes a year, Newcastle exports more coal than any other harbour in the world. Scientists inform us that global greenhouse pollution, and therefore fossil fuel use, must be reduced radically and immediately if the world is to avoid the most devastating potential impacts of climate change. Instead, Hunter coal exports are about to undergo a massive expansion. Through infrastructure projects like the Sandgate Rail Flyover (due for completion this year), and the third Newcastle coal loader (2009), Hunter coal exports are set to increase by at least 65% in the next few years.

While we are continually told how economically dependent we are on coal, employment in the industry declined by 23% between 1996 and 2001, as production increased by about the same amount. Less than 1% of NSW revenue last financial year was derived from coal royalties. One thing is certain however, the survival of both human and non-human life on earth requires the Hunter to move away from coal exports. Not to mention the region itself. You can help by writing a letter, using the guide below. We have included a couple of suggested points to use in your letter, but please add whatever you like. You should send a copy to your local members, or alternatively just send it to us, and we'll pass copies on to all relevant politicians.

Re: Hunter coal export expansion

Dear Mr Iemma and Mr Howard,

I am opposed to the expansion of Hunter coal exports. The proposed third coal loader in Newcastle, new coal mines proposals and all other developments to increase Hunter coal exports are not in the region's or Australia's interests, since they will signficantly increase our contribution to global climate change.

Global greenhouse pollution needs to be cut massively and quickly if the world is to avoid the most devastating impacts of climate change. Since coal is a major source of global greenhouse pollution, Australia has a responsibility to phase out coal exports, not increase them.

Sincerely,

Your name
