"Calling Out" - Solidarity with Indigenous People
'CALLING OUT'
To share solidarity with indigenous people on climate change.
With the climate changing and the seas rising Australia's island neighbours in the Pacific and Torres Strait are in great danger of being displaced.
'Calling Out' is a response to this urgent crisis, promoting solidarity with our neighbours. Organised by the Pacific Calling Partnership as part of this year's Marrickville Cultural Festival, this huge FREE event will feature amazing music and dance performances from local and international artists with a focus on Pacific Island indigenous cultures.
The event will have a strong Australian indigenous flavour. Dharawal woman Frances Bodkin will give the welcome to country and share an indigenous perspective on solidarity with our neighbours in the face of climate change. Sister Geraldine Kearney from the sisters of the good Samaritans will tell stories about her recent trip to the Torres Strait Islands and the struggles they are facing with climate change. To top it off, the delightful sounds of indigenous vocal group FRESH WATER will feature amongst the performances.
Headlining the performances event will be the world-renowned NZ-based Pacific phenomenon TE VAKA. There will also be stirring songs from songwriters in the Pacific Calling Partnership and the Marrickville High School Pacific Island cultural group. 'Calling Out' will also feature a preview screening of the DVD Kiribati and Global Warming.
