Hunter Catholics – a response to Climate Change and Global Warming

Poster attached. “There’s a benevolent spirit about the climate change crisis, everyone is motivated to make a difference and it’s a matter of linking up the right tools with the right people.” “Domestically there is technology available to help households actually lower their emissions.” “The only sustainable way forward is to put rational activity firmly in the context of moral values.” The “Hunter Catholics – a response to Climate Change and Global Warming” seminar is open for all to attend - Thurs 15th May at 7 pm It will be a unique environmental discussion at Sacred Heart Cathedral, 841 Hunter Street, Hamilton and will bring together three keynote environmental speakers, and members of the public. Jesuit priest Fr Michael Kelly, Religious Sister of Mercy Sr Maryanne Loughry, and CSIRO experimental scientist Tania Ritchie will each address the audience on these environmental issues, but from different viewpoints. Sr Maryanne will reflect on her experiences and research into low lying Pacific countries. Tania, who is based at the CSIRO Energy Technology Centre in Newcastle, and fresh from her appearance at the recent 2020 Summit in Canberra, will be focusing on large and small scale techniques to address climate change. Fr Michael, in summing up, will turn his attention to the biblical and ethical foundations for caring for the planet, and the Hunter. There will be plenty of time for questions at the seminar, and we hope it will stimulate much discussion on the night, and ongoing discussions. Entry to the Cathedral is free but donations by gold coin or notes to cover expenses would be appreciated. Any surplus will be donated to the Jesuit Refugee Service. In addition to inviting Catholic clergy and parishioners, and high school Students & Staff, we are also extending the invitation much wider including to; The Hunter Heads of Churches, and their Ministers and Clergy and their parishioners; Staff and students at the Newcastle Uni and we will also be contacting the TAFEs. We will also ask: The CSIRO to publicise the seminar to its own staff ( 120 scientists at Mayfield West ), and wider; Various Environmental and Green Groups to publicise via their mailing lists, and will also try the Hunter Valley Research Institute. We will also issue Media releases and seek editorial in the press and electronic media. Optimistically, John L Hayes For The Newcastle City Region Catholic Social Justice Group For more information contact John Hayes on 4961 3130.
