Forum - Lawyers, Protests and the Front Line of Climate Change

26.06.2008 - 17:15
26.06.2008 - 18:30
Etc/GMT+10

In the face of dangerous levels of climate change, the public is becoming increasingly strident in its calls for significant action on greenhouse pollution. The Camp for Climate Action in Newcastle in July will see a broad cross-section of people from across Australia converge to take direct action on climate change.

This Forum aims to engage members of the legal community in responding to people caught between their concern for our future and the inaction of decision-makers. The Forum will explain the objectives of Climate Camp and why the public is turning to civil disobedience in the need for a just transition to a green economy. The response of the legal community must be to ensure education and access to justice in the legal process. The Forum seeks to mobilise legal services and financial support to facilitate the legal education and representation of concerned people at Climate Camp and beyond.

Speakers include Jacquie Svenson, Environmental Defenders Office NSW, on the role of law in the climate change debate; and Pete Gray, Gray v the Minister (the 'Anvil Hill case'), on the Newcastle coal chain, and direct action and social change.
